Officials are citing a worrisome increase in methamphetamine trafficking and related deaths around the U.S., tempering otherwise hopeful signs that overall drug-overdose fatalities are finally leveling off.
Mexican cartels have been aggressively pushing meth into the U.S. market, including places like the Northeast, where the stimulant was once relatively scarce, Drug Enforcement Administration agents said. Meth, a synthetic alternative to plant-based stimulants like cocaine and crack, is made in labs and doesn’t require farming.
