A slimming pill that was found to triple the chance of significant weight loss without damaging the heart has raised hopes of finding a “holy grail” in the fight against obesity.
The appetite suppressant helped people to lose more than 10kg (one and a half stone) over a year while cutting their blood pressure, heart rate and risk of diabetes, a large trial found.
A quarter of British adults are obese and experts said yesterday that doctors should be more confident about prescribing slimming medication as a halfway house between simple dieting and weight-loss surgery.
