Certain batches of medications used to treat hypothyroidism are being recalled after a Chinese supplier failed a Food and Drug Administration inspection.
The medications involved, which contain a combination of levothyroxine and liothyronine, are synthetic thyroid hormones used when a patient’s thyroid gland is no longer working property, according to CNN. The medications came from Westminster Pharmaceuticals, which is voluntarily recalling the drugs.

The FDA inspected a Westminster supplier, the Sichuan Friendly Pharmaceutical Co., in October, according to CNN. In June, the agency told the Chinese company that the plant was not meeting manufacturing standards, which could cause potential problems with the purity of its products.
Westminster told its wholesalers to stop distributing the medications involved and is making arrangements for already distributed products to be returned, according to a news release from the FDA.
There have been no “adverse events” associated with the recalled medications, according to USA Today. Patients should continue taking the drugs and talk with their doctors if they have questions.
“Because these products may be used in the treatment of serious medical conditions, patients taking the recalled medicines should continue taking their medicine until they have a replacement product,” the FDA said.

Westminster CEO Gajan Mahendiran said the company stands behind the quality of its products. He said the company was taking the “utmost precaution” by recalling the medications involved, according to CNN.
The recall affects 37 unexpired lots of levothyroxine and liothyronine in doses of 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 milligrams, CNN said. The medications come in 100-count bottles.
